The Ford Mustang is a famous American car first launched by Ford Motor Company as a 1965 model, with production beginning on March 9, 1964, at the Rouge assembly plant in Dearborn, Michigan. It was officially introduced to the press on April 13, 1964, and went on sale on April 17.

The Mustang was showcased at the New York World’s Fair, featuring a ride designed by Walt Disney. The base price was $2,368 for a model with a 170 cubic inch engine, 101 horsepower, and a 3-speed manual transmission.

Significant upgrades occurred on August 17, 1964, leading enthusiasts to refer to earlier models as “early” or 1964-1/2 Mustangs, while those made after are known as “late” or 1965 Mustangs.

The public’s reception was remarkable. Sales were 121,538 for the 1964-1/2 cars plus 559,451 for 1965—a total of 680,989 first model-year Mustangs. And, 607,568 sales for the 1966 second model-year. Ford now says the Mustang is the world’s best-selling sports car, with over 10 million sold.

The Mustang name idea originally came from the World War II-era P-51 fighter aircraft and later from the wild mustang horsethat roamed the American plains—both appropriate for Ford’s vision of American spirit and freedom it wanted to project with the car.
